Workplace injuries are very common. Unfortunately, few workers know what to do if they are hurt. A workplace injury can be a complex matter, so it's a good idea to have something of a game-plan ready for what might happen. Below are three steps you should take after almost any kind of major workplace injury.

Follow All (Reasonable) Work Protocols

Every workplace has its protocols for dealing with injuries. No matter what your profession, there are steps your workplace wants you to take to ensure your health, and limit liability. Always follow these protocols unless what you are asked to do will endanger your health. It is always a good idea to report your injury to a supervisor or the nearest available person at your place of work. Even if you can't follow every rule after the accident, you should try to keep your place of work in the loop as much as possible.

Ensure Your Get Treatment

In most cases, an on-the-job injury will be treated by a doctor of the company's choosing. In most cases, you will get adequate treatment and never have to spend a dime. In other cases, you might not feel this doctor has your best interests in mind. No matter what the case, it's important you get a second opinion from your own doctor. Remember, your company isn't just trying to help you, it is trying to cover its own liability. You need to see someone who will have your best interests at heart for your own health.

Talk to a Lawyer

Finally, make sure you talk to an attorney. Talking to a lawyer after an injury does not necessarily mean you have to file a lawsuit. It is a good idea to get advice on what you should expect from your company though. A good lawyer will help see you through the tough process of getting compensation if your company does not do right by you. This is one situation in which it is better to be safe than sorry.

If you are injured on the job, your primary concern should always be your health. Make sure you follow work protocols to the best of your ability, but always make sure you get the treatment you need. Whether your company does the right thing or not, you should put yourself in the best possible position to get back on your feet.
